The cross is down.
The guys from SDI are working hard to take our cross down in preparation for the roofers. Don’t worry, they’re saving it and it’ll be cleaned up and put back in place as soon as the roof is completed.
They’re carefully taking down the cross but the lighting rod that was inside the cross will remain in place during the roofing process.
From this angle we can see not only the guys as they take the cross down but a bit of the original siding above the new portion of the church.
The it is! This cross has been atop our steeple for as long as anyone can remember. We know that it’s copper (yes, that color is a combination of patina and bird droppings) but soon it’ll be cleaned up and shining brightly, ready to be placed back atop the steeple.
When the siding was pulled off the peak the contractors discovered the frame for the round window that can be seen in the oldest known picture of the church. It appears that the layers of siding were simply placed over the window frame but it had never been removed. They were kind enough to save it for us and we’re creating something special from it. We can’t share more than that right now but look for this in the church when you visit after we’ve reopened!
Our cross is down, our steeple is bare, and we’re ready to see it come back to life with new shingles and our cross shined up and ready for another 128 years.
